CONCEPT Zone

UH Manoa is offering its first "innovative spaces" for professors and students! Drop into the Concept Zone to see what's behind teaching classrooms new tricks!

Resource Zone

In the Resource Zone, you will find engaging articles and videos on innovative classroom spaces. For D-101, the Resource Zone features videos, links and tutorials for SMART Board use.

Room Request Zone 

Sakamaki D-101, D-102 and D-103 are classrooms unlike any others at Manoa. The committee will be assigning rooms in the Sakamaki Innovation Zone according to a configuration of factors. Two kinds of examples would be the number of students registered, and specific innovative practices.

  • The best exercises were ones where I asked the students to write/draw on the Board their analysis of the text we read. They were surprisingly creative--the space freed them up to do mind maps, stick drawings, diagrams (and we had one artist who really got into illustrations!). We could then move around the room focusing on one student's thoughts and letting them explain what they had put on the Board.

  • The Smart Board allows for us to connect our own computers and share our movies and editing works in progress easily through Airplay.

  • The most influential aspect of the classroom, I thought, was the positioning of seats in a U shape facing the teacher, but also allowing the students to see each other. The room was visually interesting and pleasant to be in, a much better feeling than a cold, stark, dead classroom.
