Second Language Studies

Anna Mendoza is a PhD student in Second Language Studies at UHM. Her research/teaching interests include sociolinguistics (the social contexts of language learning), first and second language writing at the tertiary level, and teacher action research. While these are her areas of specialization, she is also interested in cognitive processes of language learning and quantitative research methods such as surveys and text corpora to gather any information that could have a positive impact on the teaching of writing and writing program design.

Formerly lead writing teacher at the English Language Institute, she is offering a four-part faculty development seminar on supporting multilingual students. Topics include strategies for scaffolding understanding of linguistically-challenging, content-heavy material, and ways of encouraging independent study and student-driven forms of peer support.
