Ocean and Resources Engineering

Yaprak Onat completed her Ph.D. and Master’s in Ocean and Resources Engineering (ORE) at UHM. Her research interest focuses on extratropical storm generated swell effects on the coastal exposure. She earned Denise Evans Oceanographic Research award in 2013 with her work. She brings her civil engineering background into ocean modeling, coastal hazard management, tsunami modeling and design of coastal structures. The teaching experience that she developed by teaching civil engineering students in Turkey continued at UH. She served as teaching assistant in ORE and Civil and Environmental Engineering Departments of UH at junior, senior and graduate level. She mentored research and senior thesis project of students from various backgrounds. She is a teaching enthusiast that aims to raise the potential of each student by improving the learning environment and teaching techniques for STEM students. She has been actively working with the Center of Teaching Excellence to train new international teaching assistants and learn new techniques to create better learning environments. https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Yaprak_Onat
