Presenting Content-Heavy Material to Multilingual Students

This workshop for Teaching Assistants will explore some key principles for teaching challenging materials to multilingual students, focused on both language and content.

Topics will include:
• Establishing the scope of the course so students know how weekly topics relate to each other and how the course relates to other courses
• Priming students for what they are going to read week by week so that academic papers make more sense to them
• Fostering and building multilingual study practices into course assignments, including: finding material in one’s first language, bilingual note-taking techniques, and bi/multilingual study groups

There will be a balance of presentation and small group discussion. Participants will leave with a handout of 10-12 classroom activities and assignments for each of the three strategies.
