The University of Hawai’i Sea Grant College Program
Place–based research is especially important in the Hawaiian Islands where communities have deep
cultural, ecological, spiritual, and social ties to place. This workshop will feature a panel of UH Faculty recognized as leaders in place–based research across diverse disciplines. Panel discussion will focus on the importance of place–based research in the Hawai‘i context as well as the panelists’ personal experiences designing and implementing place–based research initiatives.
This workshop is the first in a three part series providing professional development around best practices for building and sustaining long–term relationships between researchers and community.

Place-based research is especially important in the Hawaiian Islands where communities have deep
cultural, ecological, spiritual, and social ties to place. The Place-Based Research Matters series will focus on best practices for building community and researcher partnerships outlined in the Kūlana Noi`i (Research Standards).

This workshop will cover strategies for building and sustaining collaborative relationships between community and researchers. The format will center around small group discussions lightly facilitated by faculty members with expertise in community engagement and place-based research. The intention is for faculty from a diverse range of disciplines to come together and share practical approaches and strategies for place-based research.
Topics covered during this workshop will include:
• Demonstrating respect and self-awareness in community engagement
• Building reciprocal relationships between community and researchers
• Maintaining inclusive, transparent, and open communication throughout the research process

cultural, ecological, spiritual, and social ties to place. The Place-Based Research Matters series will focus on best practices for building community and researcher partnerships outlined in the Kūlana Noi`i (Research Standards).
Mālama aku, mālama mai—care is given, and care is received. The Hawaiian concept of mālama relates to caring for, maintaining, and supporting one another. When we mālama the communities where we work, our work is deepened and enriched. This third and final workshop in the “Place Based Research Matters” series will cover strategies for deepening established relationship between researchers and community. The format will center around small group discussions with “faculty catalysts” with expertise in community engagement and place-based research.
