He Moʻokūʻauhau Ko Ka ʻĀina: Our Genealogy of Place, a Starting Point for Developing Hawai‘i, Asia & Pacific Courses

The purposes of the Hawai‘i, Asia & Pacific (HAP) State of Mind Workshop Series is to support faculty in developing and proposing HAP focus courses. HAP courses are intended to focus on issues in Native Hawaiian and Asian and Pacific cultures and history. In this first of a series of professional development workshops, Dr. Maya Saffery and Dr. Konia Freitas will focus on the Native Hawaiian component as it serves as the starting point for comparing and contrasting voice, values, and perspectives among Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific cultures.

This workshop, entitled He moʻokūʻauhau ko ka ʻāina, will:

  • Illustrate how our Native places are living beings with genealogies of their own
  • Examine how the concept of moʻokūʻauhau can lead to changes in perspectives, pedagogies, and course practices
  • When we return to and reflect on moʻokūʻauhau, our unique positionalities inform our kuleana or relationships, responsibilities, and obligations to our Native places and people.

The HAP State of Mind Series is co-sponsored by The General Education Office, the Hawaiian, Asian & Pacific Issues Focus board and the Center for Teaching Excellence.
