Center for Teaching Excellence

spacerTAKE OUR TOUR

We are the part of the Office of Faculty Development & Academic Support the University of Hawai`i at Manoa that focuses on creating teaching and learning environments in which:

  • teachers and students are engaged by and grow in their knowledge of the course materials together, at the same time that knowledge and understanding of students and of teaching and learning styles and strategies grow stronger for teachers who, in great part, arrive in Hawai'i from very diverse cultures and educational backgrounds from their students who, in great part, were born and raised in Hawai'i - so that teaching and learning takes place in a climate of greater respect and exchange
  • knowledge of oneself as teacher and one's teaching work within this particular university grows as a social act connected to the history of this place, and to those for whom this is their first and only homeland

CTE serves as a support across departments at Manoa for:

  • new and junior faculty and graduate teaching assistants who are new to college teaching, or new to teaching at Manoa or in Hawai'i
senior faculty interested in reexamining and revitalizing their teaching strategies faculty who are building a record of teaching development which can be used in promotion and tenure decisions, or contract renewal
  • graduate teaching assistants who are building a record of teaching development to be used in the renewal of their teaching assistantship, or towards their future teaching potential upon graduation

Through the following programs and services, the Center attempts to address the many pedagogical and professional issues that relate directly to teaching and learning, and to ethical and professional development:
